What will change for Brussels residents at the national or Flemish level in 2022?

Bruxelles, Brussels Capital Region, Belgium - September 24, 2021: General Labour Federation of Belgium (FGTB) union national demonstration, strike, rally. Protest for not reached agreement on wages.

Brussels (BrusselsMorning) According to a report by BRUZZ, many employees who are residents of Brussles will receive more wages nationally from January through a combination of high inflation, tax measures and new collective agreements. This is the case, for example, for IT and consultancy companies and call centers, the hospitality industry, food, road transport for third parties, international logistics, electricians, the distribution sector and government personnel.

In addition, from 1 January, the tax authorities will withhold less withholding tax from wages and the tax scales will also be indexed. Both measures together provide all employees – in both the private and public sectors – for at least 20 euros extra per month.

Nurses with a recognized specialization will also receive a compliment on top of their salary. This concerns 833 euros to 2,500 euros gross extra on an annual basis.

Banks

From January 1, 2022, most banks will offer a universal banking service (UBD). The UBD will allow manual transfers on paper at a reasonable rate so that banking remains affordable for non-digital customers.

The tax authorities also have access to how much money is in Belgian bank accounts. As of this year, banks that are active in the country must report the balances on their bank and payment accounts and certain financial contracts to the Central Point of Contact for Accounts and Financial Contracts (CAP) twice a year.

In addition, a number of banks have again increased the rates for current accounts. These are BNP Paribas Fortis, Bpost bank, Crelan and Deutsche Bank.

Social

The maximum bill for care was also reduced from 450 euros to 250 euros. The reduction applies to every family with a net taxable income of up to 11,120 euros. It concerns medical costs in the broad sense: the general practitioner, hospitalization, costs for medicines, but also care with a physiotherapist, for example.

Mobility

From this year on, the NMBS will introduce flexible subscriptions for teleworkers or commuters who only go to the office two or three times a week. A standard subscription is no longer interesting for teleworkers, the NMBS fears. The customer can choose to travel either 80 or 120 days of their choice within a 12-month period to and from a fixed workplace, or their choice of 6 or 10 days per month. The subscription is only for smartphone users, the existing paper subscriptions will continue to exist.

Taxes for diesel and petrol commercial vehicles have increased from 1 January. The taxable benefit of these cars increases due to the annual adjustment of the reference CO2 emissions, the average emissions of newly registered cars.
