Belgium, (Brussels Morning Newspaper) Women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights are human rights. However, women in Europe still have these rights denied or restricted as a result of laws, policies, and practices that ultimately reflect continuing gender stereotypes and inequalities. States must resolutely commit to advancing gender equality in this crucial sphere of life.
They have the duty to provide all women with accessible, affordable, good-quality sexual and reproductive health care and services.
MEPs urge member states to protect and further enhance women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights.
MEP Rodríguez Ramos María Soraya from Renew Europe for Brussels Morning stated that sexual and reproductive rights, including the right to safe and legal abortion, are women’s rights, which today are being attacked and defied across the world, including in the European Union. Respect for women’s freedom and their health is part of the rule of law in the EU.
She noted that from Renew Europe, we have asked to include the right to safe and legal abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and this is fundamental to truly secure this right for all European women.
On the other hand, MEP Samira Rafaela also from Renew Europe said that the European Union can’t look away from the horrible injustice of limiting the access of women to abortion care.
“The only way to guarantee the bodily dignity and integrity of women in Europe is to include the right to safe and legal abortion in our EU charters. It’s about human lives, not abstract rights” said to Brussels Morning, MEP Samira.
