Swimming pool Sportcity closed until June 30 due to maintenance work

The Olympic swimming pool Sportcity in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre will be closed for a few months because it will receive a new ventilation system. This should both reduce energy costs and improve air quality. The work will last until the end of June.

The new ventilation system will enable significant energy savings of approximately 30 percent. The swimming pool – an Olympic swimming pool – is the largest energy consumer in the municipality’s public buildings. “When we see the increase in energy costs today, we are happy that we have got a little ahead of things,” Mayor Benoît Cerexhe (CDH) told BX1.

The mayor also explains that the work will make it possible to reduce the trichloramine content in the air: “It was too high, and without investment, it would have caused long-term problems in meeting the requirements of Brussels Environment.”

A budget of more than two million euros has been made available (between 2.2 and 2.4 million). “This is a very large investment, which complements the investments already made in recent years, with the renovation of the changing rooms, lockers, lighting and the installation of the anti-drowning detection system,” explains Cerexhe.

During the three months of closure, schools offering swimming lessons in the pool will be offered a formula to organise other sports activities instead of swimming lessons. Season tickets and ten-pool tickets are extended for individual swimmers.
