Brussels, (Brussels Morning)- Proponents of the Good Move mobility plan: they exist too. On Wednesday, about 25 residents of Schaerbeek gathered on Place Stephenson to support the circulation plan in their neighbourhood. “During the anti-protests of recent days, I saw very few people from the neighbourhood.”
“If the municipality of Schaerbeek remains passive and cowardly, I’ll fix the circulation plan myself.” This is what Vincent Flibustier writes in a tweet, accompanied by a video in which he puts back the traffic bollards that were illegally removed on Tuesday evening by opponents of the Good Move plan.
Flibustier says he is outraged by the recent actions. On Monday, activists gathered on the Stephenson and Paviljoenplein and on Tuesday evening they also gathered in the Berenkuilwijk. Traffic filters of the circulation plan were dismantled during both actions.
“I didn’t recognize anyone from our neighbourhood,” Flibustier notes. “They are opponents of the Good Move plan who do not live here, but nevertheless make themselves heard. They are supported by the MR, PS and PVDA/PTB, who were also present. The municipality does not punish them for their actions.”
Bang
Flibustier has lived in the Stephenson district for five years and, according to him, many local residents do support the plan: Good Move tackles a number of problems thoroughly, it says. “The traffic sometimes makes it unlivable, not to mention the races. Drivers then accelerate loudly and drive more than 100 kilometres per hour through the streets. That is life-threatening. In addition, there is a lot of transit traffic. the neighbourhood is liveable again,” he says.
“The opponents are making themselves heard loudly, but are doing so in such an aggressive way that proponents are afraid to speak their mind,” he continues. “But don’t worry: the supporters are there. We have a WhatsApp group with about fifty members, all from the neighbourhood.”
On Wednesday, around 25 local residents gathered at Stephensonplein at 4 pm to express their support. In addition to ships Adelheid Byttebier (Green), 25 opponents were also present. Both groups discussed with each other, without getting into each other’s hair.
