The ban on the sale of alcohol between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. in the Noordwijk will be extended by a month. This has been decided by the mayor of Schaerbeek, Cécile Jodogne (DéFI).
Following the murder of Inspector Thomas Monjoie, drastic restrictions on all nighttime and commercial activities were imposed in the Noordwijk in order to improve safety in the neighbourhood.
This includes the evening ban on the sale of alcohol, which took effect on December 8, 2022 and replaced an ordinance that took effect on November 13, 2022.
Slight Drop in Crime
A January 12 police report showed a slight drop in crime in the area and a decrease in problematic gatherings around places where alcohol is sold.
According to the report, the measures would also ensure satisfaction among shopkeepers and traders in the area.
The cabinet of Mayor Jodogne announces that the following measures will remain in force until February 15:
- A prohibition, with the exception of cafes, restaurants, delivery services, to sell alcoholic beverages to take away from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- Authorization for the police services to carry out surveillance and control activities on people in public spaces 24 hours a day.
- A ban on more than five people gathering in public space 24 hours a day.
