The state of the Brexit negotiations will require the EU’s prime ministers to convene again next week Thursday and Friday. Also on the EU leaders’ agenda is the EU’s new climate package and emissions reductions targets, as well as the new partnership agenda with the African Union ahead of the October EU-AU Summit.
To strengthen the EU’s strategic alliance with Africa, the European Commission and High Representative Borrell have had discussions with African partners to jointly define the upcoming new comprehensive EU strategy with Africa. The aim is to have a focus on green transition and energy access, digital transformation, sustainable growth and jobs, peace and governance and partnership on migration and mobility, respectively. Dates for the EU-AU Summit remain to be confirmed.
Ministers will have to content themselves to online meetings this week, with economics and finance ministers discussing the Recovery and Resilience Facility on Tuesday. Home affairs ministers will discuss the recent Commission proposals for a new pact on migration and asylum, the latest initiatives to engage with third countries on migration and the development of a strategic European Police Partnership, all online on Thursday.
The EU’s ministers of justice will convene by videoconference Friday to discuss digitalisation in the field of access to justice and on the charter of fundamental rights, particularly regarding artificial intelligence and digital change. Ministers will also exchange views on antisemitism and hate speech and on the EU strategy to combat sexual abuse of children.
Next week, the foreign affairs ministers will convene in person to exchange views on Russia and on EU relations with Latin America and the Caribbean region.
Ministers of employment and social affairs will meet next weekTuesday to discuss equality of women and men in the labour market.
