Motion to freeze circulation plan in Pentagon voted down

Brussels, (Brussels Morning)- At the city council of the city of Brussels on Monday, a motion to freeze the circulation plan was voted down. Only MR, Open VLD and PVDA voted in favour, while CD&V and Les Engagés abstained.

According to the BRUZZ, Opposition parties MR and Open VLD submitted a motion to the Brussels city council to obtain a moratorium on the Good Move traffic plan of the Pentagon. The liberals want a freeze on the circulation plan in the next 10 to 12 months. According to councillor David Weytsman, that time should be used to consult the traders and the population in order to come up with a new and widely supported plan.

“The inhabitants of Brussels have the feeling that you are not listening, that you disrespect them and that is proven by the testimonies of the traders and residents who suffer from the plan. You must have the courage to reconsider the plans,” says Weytsman. “I suggest that you take your time and develop a new working method for the next mobility plans. I ask you to come up with a new plan in the fall of 2023, when the works on the inner ring are over,” says the liberal.

The motion was ultimately not approved. Only MR, Open VLD and PVDA voted in favour, while CD&V and Les Engagés abstained. The Christian Democrats also find the timing of the start of the plan unfortunate, now that the works on the Troontunnel are causing extra nuisance.

‘Brussel bashing’

Mobility alderman Bart Dhondt indicated once again that the plan will continue to improve where necessary. The way in which the liberals speak out against the plan is met with incomprehension.

“A moratorium is a city that stands still and does not reform. What is bad is that with your moratorium you continue to do what you have been doing since the start of the circulation plan. That is ‘Brussels bashing’. The traders I speak to just ask me to stop that,” said Dhondt.
