The Crickx Park is one of the few green spaces in Kuregem. But the place is not well maintained, to the great frustrations of the local residents. The nearby Petite island, which had to become a place for nature, sports and play, looks like a landfill.
The Crickx park is a small park on Emile Carpentierstraat in Anderlecht. In 2011, local residents have refurbished it on their own. But now the park is again deteriorated. The net of the football goal is torn, the seesaw is broken and the trampolines are also due for innovation. Only the sports devices at the end of the park still look decent.
The municipality is aware of the state of the park. The seesaw will be repaired and a municipal official must ensure that the facilities function properly and are in good condition. “You can’t let children play on a broken seesaw, that’s why we put fences around it,” authorized ships Allan Neuzy (Ecolo) to La Capitale. “But if it takes more than a week, as in the case of the Crickx Park, that’s too long.”
Petite Island
Another green space that is not well maintained is ‘Petite Island’ in the Grondelsstraat. The car -free street had to become a place for nature, sports and play, but there is little to see. There are empty cans, bottles and cigarette packages everywhere.
Yet people are still coming. “We unfortunately got used to it,” says a couple who are walking their dog. “But there are just no alternatives. So we have to do it with this. It is so dirty and the municipality does not intervene, while this could really be a nice place.”
According to Neuzy, the current state is transient. “In the winter there are fewer local residents present, so that people come to make a mess,” he tells La Capitale.
The green spaces also have a drug problem. “We know that this happens too often in Kuregem,” says Neuzy. “There are no wonder recipes, but we will ensure that families are more present in the parks by making them more hospitable. That keeps users away.”
Neuzy also promises to renew the Crickx Park in the coming months and years. “The permit for the redesign of the area will be submitted by Beliris in the coming weeks.”
