BRUSSELS (Brussels Morning) – Brussels firefighters intervened on Sunday shortly after 2 a.m. for a major roof fire in a three-storey building located rue De Neck, not far from Place Simonis, in Koekelberg.

“When the firefighters arrived on the scene, they found themselves in front of a fully developed fire in the attic and the roof. There was a strong release of smoke in the street,“ described Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the Brussels fire brigade .

A slightly burned person

“The residents were able to get out of the building in time. They were not injured, apart from one person who was slightly burned and who was treated on the spot . The building is uninhabitable, gas and electricity have been cut off. As for the origin of the fire, it remains to be determined,” the spokesperson continued.

The firefighters stayed on site for about two hours, with two auto-ladders and two auto-pumps, for extinguishing and clearing work, and to monitor a possible resumption of the fire. “Thanks to our rapid intervention, a spread to neighboring buildings could be avoided ”, underlined Walter Derieuw.

The house has been left uninhibited

The Brussels fire brigade was able to successfully prevent the fire from spreading to the adjacent houses. But after the extinguishing works, the house was declared uninhabitable. It has been ensured no one resides in the building given it’s burnt run down condition.

When the fire brigade arrived around 2 a.m. on Sunday night, the fire in De Neckstraat was raging: “It burned violently in the attic and on the roof. There was also a strong smoke all around in the street,” says Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the Brussels fire brigade. “The residents were able to leave the building in time. No one was injured, except for one person who was treated on site for minor burns.”

The building has been declared uninhabitable, gas and electricity have been cut off. The origin of the fire is still under investigation.

It is safe to say that a major disaster was prevented.
