Brussels (Brussels Morning – November 26, 2019) Huub Broers of N-VA surprises the municipal council in Voeren by announcing his decision to pass on the mayor’s sash to his 31-year-old party colleague Joris Gaens. Citing the need for rejuvenation, Broers expresses confidence in the younger generation’s readiness.*

What Prompted Huub Broers’ Unexpected Decision?

In a surprising turn of events at the municipal council in Voeren, Huub Broers, a prominent figure within the N-VA, declared on Thursday evening his intention to relinquish the mayor’s position to his 31-year-old party colleague Joris Gaens. Broers, who is set to turn 68 by year’s end, attributes his decision to the imperative of rejuvenation. “I will be 68 years old at the end of this year and it is therefore high time to rejuvenate. The young guard is ready,” Broers remarked, underscoring his confidence in the emerging talent within the party. Furthermore, Broers expressed paternal pride in his daughter Hilde’s ascension to the chairmanship of the OCMW.

Reflecting on Huub Broers’ Storied Political Career

Having dedicated 37 years of his life to political service in Voeren, Huub Broers leaves behind a legacy marked by his tenure as mayor for nineteen years and his service as alderman for twelve years. While the announcement may have caught many off guard, Broers reveals that the decision had been in the works for three months. The official handover of the mayor’s sash to Joris Gaens is slated for January 1, 2020, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Voeren’s political landscape.
