How to reduce cheek swelling after wisdom teeth removal? Teeth development is a journey that spans from childhood to adulthood, with each tooth making its grand entrance at different stages. However, there is a special type of tooth that often causes discomfort and complications, the wisdom tooth. These molars, located at the back of the mouth, are notorious for being the last to emerge. Wisdom teeth normally appear during the teenage years and early adulthood, usually between the ages of 17 to 25.

The challenge arises when these teeth attempt to erupt in a space that simply doesn’t have room for them, leading to various issues. In such cases, a wisdom teeth removal procedure is often recommended by dentists. This article will guide you through the process of reducing cheek swelling after wisdom teeth removal.

Understanding Wisdom Teeth Eruption

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are flat teeth that develop at the posterior end of the mouth on both sides. Their late arrival on the dental scene can cause significant discomfort and potential complications due to limited space for proper growth. When wisdom teeth encounter this spatial constraint, they often become impacted, leading to pain, infection, and damage to neighboring teeth. To alleviate these issues, the extraction of wisdom teeth is a standard dental procedure.

How To Reduce Cheek Swelling After Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Recovery from wisdom teeth removal largely depends on two factors: the complexity of the extraction procedure and the post-treatment care you provide. Swelling around the gums is a common side effect after wisdom teeth removal, but there are steps you can take to minimize it and ensure a smoother recovery.

1. The First 24 Hours: Immediate Care

  • Apply a Cold Compress: The first 24 hours following wisdom teeth removal can be uncomfortable due to the lingering effects of anesthesia. To reduce swelling, gently apply a cold compress to the outer cheek area where the extraction occurred. It is advisable to maintain this application for 15-minute intervals throughout the day. This helps reduce the flow of fluids to the affected area, subsequently reducing swelling
  • Avoid Food, Drink, and Smoking: Swelling can worsen if food particles become trapped in the extraction site. Chewing on chewy foods or exerting excessive pressure on your jaw while eating can increase discomfort and swelling. During the initial 24 hours, it’s essential to keep the extracted area clean and food-free. Also, steer clear of alcohol and smoking during this time. Opt for lukewarm water if you’re thirsty to avoid exacerbating the swelling

2. After 24 Hours: Continued Care

  • Apply a Warm Compress: Once you pass the 48-hour mark post-treatment, you can switch from cold to warm compresses. Use a heat pack or a damp towel (ensuring it’s not too hot) and apply it to the affected area for 20-minute intervals, with breaks in between. This warm compress can help alleviate discomfort and promote healing

Additional Tips for Speedy Recovery

In addition to the above steps, consider these extra tips to aid in a quicker recovery:

  • Elevate Your Head: Keep your head elevated when lying down or before going to sleep. This can assist to reduce blood flow to the swollen area and alleviate discomfort
  • Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: If you find the pain difficult to manage, over-the-counter pain relief medication can be helpful. These medications can reduce inflammation and discomfort, allowing you to recover more comfortably

Conclusion: How To Reduce Cheek Swelling After Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Recovering after the process of wisdom teeth removal doesn’t have to be a painful ordeal. Following these simple steps and providing proper care can significantly reduce cheek swelling and discomfort after the procedure. Remember that everyone’s recovery process is unique, and the duration of swelling can vary based on the complexity of the extraction. Be patient, take care of yourself, and consult your dentist if you have any concerns during the recovery period. With the right care and precautions, you’ll be back to your normal self in no time.
