Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Wisdom teeth removal is a common dental procedure that many people go through at some point in their lives. Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically erupt in the late teens or early twenties. The teeth removal may be necessary if they are causing problems such as overcrowding, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth. Preparing for wisdom teeth extraction is crucial to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience.

Tips To Prepare Yourself Before Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to emerge in the back of the mouth. Not everyone has wisdom teeth, but those who do may experience pain, discomfort, and even infection. If you are scheduled to have your wisdom teeth removed, here are some tips on how to prepare for the procedure:

1. Consult Your Dentist or Oral Surgeon

Before the procedure, you should consult with your dentist or oral surgeon to discuss the details of the surgery. They will provide you with important information such as the type of anesthesia that will be used. You can understand the length of the procedure, and any special instructions you need to follow before and after the surgery.

2. Arrange For Someone To Drive You Home

Since you will be under the influence of anesthesia, you cannot drive after the surgery. Therefore, you should arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for a few hours after the procedure.

3. Stock Up On Soft Foods

After the surgery, you will need to eat soft foods that are easy to chew and swallow. Stock up on foods such as mashed potatoes, yogurt, applesauce, and soup. You will have plenty of options for eating or drinking.

4. Buy Necessary Supplies

You should also purchase necessary supplies such as gauze pads, ice packs, and pain relievers before the surgery. These items will help you manage the pain and swelling after the procedure.

5. Prepare Your Recovery Area

Before the surgery, you should prepare a comfortable recovery area in your home. You should have a comfortable bed or couch where you can rest, and plenty of pillows to support your head. It will be easy to have a room that is cool and dark to help you sleep.

6. Follow the Instructions of Your Dentist

Your dentist or oral surgeon will give you specific instructions to follow before and after the surgery. Be sure to follow these instructions carefully to ensure a smooth and speedy recovery. These instructions may include things like avoiding food and drink before the surgery. You may have to take antibiotics before the surgery and refrain from smoking after the surgery.

7. Take some time Off from Work or School

You will need to take some time off from work or school to recover from the surgery. Make sure you have enough time off to rest and recover fully.

8. Wear Comfortable Clothing

On the day of the surgery, you should wear loose, comfortable clothing that will allow you to move around easily. Avoid tight-fitting clothing that may rub against the extraction site and cause discomfort.

9. Avoid Strenuous Activity

After the surgery, you should avoid strenuous activity such as exercising or heavy lifting for a few days. This will help prevent bleeding and promote healing.

10. Stay Hydrated & Get Rest

Drink plenty of fluids after the surgery to help prevent dehydration. Make sure you get plenty of rest before your wisdom teeth removal. This will help you feel more relaxed and calm during the procedure. You will also have an easier time recovering afterward.

11. Have a Recovery Plan

Make a plan for your recovery period. This may include arranging for someone to help you with chores or childcare, taking time off work or school, and having entertainment. It involves books or movies available to keep you occupied during your recovery.

12. Practice Good Oral Hygiene

In the days leading up to your procedure, make sure to brush and floss regularly. Good oral hygiene can help reduce the risk of infection and promote faster healing after the procedure.

Is Wisdom Tooth Removal Surgery Painful?

Wisdom tooth removal surgery can be a bit uncomfortable, but it should not be painful if the procedure is done correctly. Your dentist or oral surgeon will use general anesthesia to numb the area before removing the tooth. You will not feel any pain during the surgery. After the surgery, you may experience some discomfort and swelling in the area. However, you can manage it with pain medication and ice packs.
