Henrotay case: Lawyer Herman Van Holsbeeck dispute on ‘new’ elements

BelgBelgium (Brussels Morning Newspaper) The Brussels Chamber of Indictment has considered the further arrest of Herman Van Holsbeeck the previous afternoon. The former manager of football club Anderlecht is in prison because he is said to have played in cahoots with football agent Christophe Henrotay during the transfers of Youri Tielemans and Aleksander Mitrovic. Van Holsbeeck’s lawyers ask that their client be released.

The investigation in the Henrotay case focuses on the settlement of several transfers, which may not have been financially correct. Years ago, Van Holsbeeck could have received large sums of money in black from Henrotay for the transfer of Alexander Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba to the English football club Newcastle, and that of Youri Tielemans to AS Monaco. All this without the knowledge of other Anderlecht directors. Players’ agents Christophe Henrotay and Van Holsbeeck were previously suspected for this, but they were released under conditions.

Last month, Van Holsbeeck was arrested again, for new elements were believed to have surfaced in the case. The former RSCA manager was placed under arrest and has been in prison in Saint-Gilles ever since. At the end of January, the council chamber confirmed the arrest of Van Holsbeeck, who appealed.

The indictment chamber considered the case and will not make a decision until Wednesday. “We argued for over an hour,” says Master Daniel Spreutels. “We request the release of Mr. Van Holsbeeck. The AI will now take its time to make a decision, which we suspect will be positive.”

According to the defense, there is no truth to the talks that new elements have surfaced in the file. “It seems that the investigators thought so, but we believe that these are elements that have already been discussed during his previous interrogations,” said lawyer Alexandre Wilmotte. “There are no new elements and we, therefore, ask for the release of our client.”
