German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Discuss Europe’s Future with MEPs on Europe Day

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised

Belgium (Brussels Morning Newspaper), German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will discuss with MEPs his views on Europe’s challenges and the bloc’s future.

The debate takes place on Tuesday, which has been designated as “Europe Day”.

Before the start of the parliamentary debate in Strasbourg, parliament’s President Roberta Metsola will make a statement to mark Europe Day.

President Metsola and Chancellor Scholz will later hold a bilateral meeting.

In an evening debate with EU commissioner Didier Reynders, MEPs will discuss their position on a new directive to improve product labeling, ban planned obsolescence so products will last longer, and end misleading claims. The vote will take place on Thursday.

MEPs will also debate with EU Commissioner Šefčovič and the Swedish Minister for EU Affairs the legislative proposals recently tabled to reform the EU’s economic governance rule. During the debate, MEPs will outline their priorities concerning this reform, building on the resolution adopted in July 2021.

Parliament at is plenary is also due to debate the EU’s accession to the Istanbul Convention on preventing violence against women and the current situation in Sudan and, separately, how to avoid an escalation in hostilities that could have far-reaching implications for the East Africa region.

In a separate vote, Parliament is expected to give its green light to suspend EU import duties on Ukrainian agricultural products for another year and approve €145 million in additional assistance to Moldova.

Elsewhere, MEPs will discuss how the EU institutions, bodies, and agencies have executed their budgets in 2021. The decision on whether to sign off the accounts will be taken on Wednesday.

The plenary will also discuss what it calls unsatisfactory developments in accession negotiations with Serbia, and Kosovo’s work to secure the status of EU candidate country.

The vote will take place on Wednesday.
