Belgium (Brussels Morning newspaper) The European Parliament has voiced a strong and united position in the fight against antimicrobial resistance, recognizing it as a silent but imminent threat to citizens.

MEP Billy Kelleher

MEP Billy Kelleher (Fianna Fáil Party, Ireland), Renew Europe shadow rapporteur for the resolution on EU action to combat antimicrobial resistance, stressed the need for urgent and decisive action to halt its progress.

Antimicrobial resistance poses a significant challenge to public health and requires immediate attention from member states. The European Parliament’s resolution emphasizes the importance of implementing comprehensive measures to address this growing concern. MEP Billy Kelleher highlighted the urgent need for better diagnostics, improved information sharing, enhanced education, and reliable data in combating antimicrobial resistance.

Kelleher emphasized the necessity of engaging all stakeholders in this endeavor. The resolution underscores the importance of collaboration among scientists, farmers, doctors, and even children to effectively tackle antimicrobial resistance. By fostering a multidisciplinary approach, the European Parliament aims to leverage the expertise and insights of various stakeholders to develop comprehensive strategies that address the multifaceted nature of the issue.

The resolution calls for enhanced diagnostics, which are vital in identifying and understanding antimicrobial resistance patterns. Access to accurate and rapid diagnostic tools will enable healthcare professionals to make informed decisions regarding the appropriate use of antibiotics, ultimately reducing the risk of resistance development.

Information sharing is another critical aspect emphasized in the resolution. Strengthening communication and collaboration between healthcare systems, veterinary services, and relevant stakeholders is crucial for effectively monitoring and addressing antimicrobial resistance. Sharing best practices, surveillance data, and research findings can foster a more coordinated and evidence-based approach to combatting this global threat.

Education also plays a pivotal role in raising awareness and promoting responsible antibiotic use. By educating healthcare professionals, patients, and the general public about the risks associated with antimicrobial resistance and the importance of prudent antibiotic use, the resolution aims to empower individuals to make informed decisions and contribute to the overall efforts in combating the issue.

Furthermore, reliable data is essential for monitoring the prevalence and impact of antimicrobial resistance. The resolution emphasizes the need for robust data collection mechanisms that provide comprehensive information on antimicrobial use, resistance patterns, and the effectiveness of interventions. Accurate and up-to-date data will enable policymakers to make evidence-based decisions and allocate resources effectively.

The adoption of this resolution by the European Parliament demonstrates a united front in addressing the critical issue of antimicrobial resistance. It serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility of member states to take immediate and decisive action to prevent further escalation. By implementing the measures outlined in the resolution, the EU can strengthen its response to antimicrobial resistance and safeguard the health and well-being of its citizens.
