Joint Statement by EU Presidents Reaffirms Support for Ukraine’s Sovereignty and Pursuit of Justice

Belgium (Brussels Morning Newspaper), Today, on the solemn occasion of the two-year mark since Russia’s egregious invasion of Ukraine, the Presidents of the European Union Institutions have issued a resolute joint statement. In it, they condemn Russia’s flagrant breach of international law and pledge unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

The statement acknowledges the relentless violence and suffering endured by the Ukrainian people in the face of Russian aggression. It honors the resilience and bravery displayed by Ukrainians as they defend their homeland and uphold shared European values in the midst of conflict and turmoil.

Asserting that Russia bears sole responsibility for the ongoing war and its far-reaching repercussions, the EU vows to hold Russian leadership accountable for their actions, including the crime of aggression. The European Union remains steadfast in its commitment to support Ukraine through various means, including political, military, financial, and humanitarian assistance.

In a significant move, the EU announces its decision to initiate accession negotiations with Ukraine, signaling a clear path towards closer integration. A substantial financial assistance package totaling 50 billion euros for the years 2024-2027 underscores the EU’s commitment to Ukraine’s economic recovery, institutional modernization, and democratic consolidation.

Furthermore, the EU pledges to address Ukraine’s urgent military and defense needs, bolstering its capabilities to resist aggression and maintain stability in the region. By ramping up European defense industry production and strengthening defense readiness, the EU aims to enhance both its support for Ukraine and its own defense sovereignty.

In tandem with international partners, the EU vows to escalate sanctions against Russia and its allies, intensifying pressure to curb further aggression and comply with international norms. Efforts to direct funds from Russian immobilized assets toward supporting Ukraine demonstrate a proactive approach to mitigating the conflict’s impact.

The statement concludes with a reaffirmation of support for Ukraine’s pursuit of a just and lasting peace based on UN principles and international law. The EU champions Ukraine’s proposed Peace Formula and advocates for a Global Peace Summit with broad international backing.

As a symbol of solidarity and resolve, EU flags will fly alongside Ukrainian flags, underscoring the union’s unwavering commitment to stand with Ukraine in its struggle for peace, security, and justice.
