Belgium, (Brussels Morning Newspaper) This week, MEPs convene during committee meetings to discuss the acceleration of permits for the development of renewable energy, and human rights in light of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, the abortion ban in Poland and the EU budget. A delegation with MEP Bas Eickhout and Commissioner for the European Green Deal and Executive VP Frans Tmmerman is attending the COP27 in Egypt.

COP27

This week, a European Parliament delegation is attending the COP27 in Egypt to push for an ambitious outcome, as the climate crisis is pressing businesses and societies alike to change behaviours in order to avert environmental catastrophe. Following up on last year’s COP26, policymakers and executives are discussing how to transform the global energy system in this decade, finding sustainable ways to produce heat and fuel.

REPowerEU

The Industry, Research and Energy Committee votes, on Monday, on draft legislation to accelerate the procedure to grant permits for new renewable energy power plants or to adapt existing ones. If approved, the proposal would also limit the grounds on which someone can legally object to new installations.

FIFA World Cup 2022 and human rights

Members of the Subcommittee on Human Rights discuss, on Monday, human rights issues during world sporting events, particularly workers’ rights in the context of the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Among the guests joining MEPs will be Qatari Minister of Labour Ali Bin Samikh Al Marri and the Head of the International Labour Organization Office in Doha, Max Tuñón.

Abortion ban in Poland

On Thursday, the Women’s Rights and Civil Liberties committees will hold a public hearing on the consequences of the de facto ban on abortion in Poland. MEPs will discuss with relatives of the first known victim of the ban and representatives of NGOs defending sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Revision of EU long-term budget

On Thursday, the Budgets Committee will make recommendations to reform the multi-annual financial framework (MFF), the EU’s long-term budget, ahead of the European Commission proposal expected for next year. MEPs have expressed a desire for a resilient EU budget fit for new challenges, as the current MFF was not designed to cope with recent events.
