Eduardo de Castro points out that “the mass and violent jumps cannot be the option to solve the dramatic situations of miseries and persecutions suffered by migrants in their countries of origin.”

The president of Melilla, Eduardo de Castro, has asked to be heard “always” from the European Union (EU) and not only when the jumps occur in the Autonomous City, while stressing that the year 2022 has left A “bitter, painful and indelible” memory for the jump to fence on June 24 with dozens of dead migrants on the Moroccan side of the fence.

From Castro, who stressed that what happened that day was “a human tragedy that charged lives, something that should never have happened,” he stressed that “the massive and violent jumps to the border fence cannot be the option for Solve the dramatic situations of miseries and persecutions suffered by migrants in their countries of origin. ” Therefore, he has indicated that “the borders should not be violated and have to be protected with adequate and supplied human means and materials” by highlighting that “we are the southern border of Europe and that means that crossing the border -or jumping the fence – It is to enter Europe. “

Melillenses Need to be Heard

In this regard, the first Melillense authority has demanded that “the Melillenses need to be heard, understood and attended to European institutions, for example, in the European Regions Committee, with whose maximums responsible I met last June in Brussels.” In this regard, he recalled that just three months later, members of that committee traveled to Melilla and did it for the first time “to learn first hand the situation of our city, which they reflected in a report that was delivered, along with a letter Mine, to the presidency of the EU Council and that served to subsequently, and also for the first time, the situation of Ceuta and Melilla was included in the order of the Plenary Session of the European Regions Committee. “

De Castro recalled that he has intervened in the preparation of the report that was presented in the aforementioned Plenary, in addition to having several work meetings with different responsible in competencies that affect Melilla. In that line, he has stressed that “it is imperative that Melilla has a presence in Europe, and will have it.” In this regard, he said that the efforts he initiated in June, and after months of conversations and procedures with the Spanish ambassador to the European Union, with the Secretary of State for the EU and with the corresponding ministry (Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation ) “They have paid off.”

Permission From Authority

For all these reasons, he announced that obtaining the authorization that will allow to open an office at the headquarters of the permanent representation of Spain in the EU, where six regions are already located (Madrid, Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y León, Castilla-La La Mancha and La Rioja), “It is imminent.” Finally, he wanted to make it clear that “much remains to be done in Brussels, but the road is already started” since “making our voice heard in the heart of Brussels is crucial for our future and disdain it, as has been done for so many years , is irresponsible”.
