EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola's Pledge to Belarusian Democracy

Valletta (Brussels Morning) – At the European Parliament Office in Valletta, President Metsola and Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya signed a Letter of Intent, solidifying support for Belarusian democracy. They emphasized solidarity and urged the release of political prisoners.

Amidst a significant ceremony at the European Parliament Office in Valletta, the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola and the Head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, affixed their signatures to a Letter of Intent. This act represents the Parliament’s unwavering commitment to bolster cooperation with the democratic forces of Belarus, a pledge that resonates with the gravity of the situation.

What Did President Metsola Highlight About Belarusian Support?

President Metsola highlighted the mutual support between the European Parliament and the democratic forces of Belarus, stating, “This is a powerful testament to our commitment to strengthen ties and to stand in solidarity with the democratic forces and civil society of Belarus in their quest for a free, independent, and democratic nation.”

What Urgent Need Did Metsola and Tsikhanouskaya Discuss?

Before the ceremony, President Metsola and Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya carried out a bilateral meeting during which they examined the urgent need for the democratic world to stand firmly and in solidarity with the democratic forces in Belarus. “Belarus will not become the forgotten corner of Europe,” stated President Metsola.

“Stronger together. We know the huge sacrifices made by the democratic forces in Belarus for freedom. With today’s Letter of Intent, we are strengthening our ties and boosting our practical support,” posted on X the President of the European Parliament.

How Did Tsikhanouskaya Thank the European Parliament?”

In her remarks, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya thanked the President and the Members of the European Parliament for delivering practical and tailored backing to the Belarusian democratic forces and civil society.

“Today is an important historical day. The democratic forces of #Belarus formalized relations with @Europarl_EN and signed a letter of intent on cooperation. I want to thank all MEPs and especially @EP_President

Roberta Metsola for this strong and unprecedented step,” authored on X the Belarusian leader.

“Dear Roberta, your unwavering boldness and resolute leadership inspire me every day. I deeply respect your dedication to upholding European values and cherish our friendship immensely. We will work with the European Parliament to free political prisoners, hold the regime accountable, and support independent media and civil society. 

“Together, we will unravel the migration issues of Belarusians who are in the & cannot return home. Together, we will oppose Russian aggression & strengthen Belarusian society and our national identity. This deal is a recognition of the courage and heroism of all Belarusians who are battling for democratic changes in our country. Belarus will definitely be a free, independent, European state. Long Live Europe! Long live Belarus!”, stressed Tsikhanouskaya.

Both leaders called for the quick release of all political prisoners in Belarus.
