Rabat (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Drones are a hot topic in the news nowadays. Whether it is the people shooting drones or Amazon using them for delivery, their popularity will not go down soon. However, Morocco has set several rules for the commercial use of drones. The drone laws in Morocco are not very different from other countries.

Morocco has a large tourism industry while the expat community is also growing fast. It has become a popular tourist destination for many people in the world. There are certain restrictions on where people can fly a drone. However, these laws are loose and welcoming as imposed on other countries in North Africa that include Egypt and Tunisia.

General Rules To Fly A Drone In Morocco

Drone operations are not yet regulated in Morocco. Here are the most important rules that you must follow before flying a drone:

  • You must consult your local Civil Aviation Authority regarding drone guidelines and regulations. The rules may differ from one country to the other
  • If your drone is more than 25 kg, you must get a permit before flying it
  • When you are using a drone for research or are paid to use it, you will still need a permit
  • It is necessary to keep your drone within your eyesight all the time
  • Don’t forget to read the user’s manual before flying the drone
  • Check your drone before every flight
  • Users cannot fly a drone within 50 meters of people, property, and cars
  • You cannot fly a drone more than 150 meters from the ground
  • Drones must not fly near the airport. They have to stay at least 8km away
  • It is important to note that being a remote pilot you are responsible to fly safely. You must avoid a collision and keep others safe

Are Drones Legal In Morocco?

Yes, drones are legal in Morocco and you can fly them around the country easily. However, you have to take the right permission before doing that. If you are a traveler it is best to seek permission from the correct sources.

The Moroccan Ministry of Interior has made it obvious that the use of drones is allowed. They must be used only for recreational purposes. If you hinder something or use drones for illegal activities, legal action can be taken against you. One of the most important rules to follow is to keep your drone within your eyesight.

If you plan to bring your drone to Morocco, make sure it is registered by the Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC). Before leaving your home country, you must ensure that there is no problem with crossing international borders. Even while landing at the Morocco airport everything must be clear.

What You need To Know About Drones In Morocco?

If you are a traveler you will notice many people selling trinkets and souvenirs in the Medina of Marrakech. It happens to be one of the most popular sites to visit in Morocco. This place boasts vibrancy and colors all at once.

When traveling with a drone, make sure you don’t fly it inside the medina. The laws are very strict regarding this matter. In any case, if you are caught, expect serious consequences. Moreover, drones are also prohibited in souks (markets).

These markets are surrounded all over Morocco where people are bargaining at their best. You can find plenty of spices, carpets, and hand-printed decorations for commercial and residential spaces. It is best not to bring any drones within the shopping area around Morocco.

Can You Register A Drone In Morocco?

Yes, you can easily register your drone in Morocco. You can do it either online or by visiting the official website of the Moroccan Civil Aviation Authority (MCAA). The MCAA holds the responsibility for registering and issuing the civil aviation certificate to everyone. It is important to know that even after registration, you may not get permission to fly a drone legally. You need to take care of other regulations must before operating a drone in Morocco.  

If you want to fly a drone in Morocco, you must understand the rules of the sky. Moreover, you need a drone pilot license along with insurance and registration. It is also necessary to get a proper idea from an experienced drone instructor before purchasing a drone.

You may also need insurance for your drone while flying it in Morocco. The insurance policy will cover any personal property damage or injury to other people. It is easy to get your insurance from a genuine company.
