A day before World Bicycle Day, cyclists all over the country can enjoy a round of applause. More than 180 teams registered to hold an applause campaign during the morning rush hour today/Friday.
With the National Applause Day, the initiators want to thank and encourage cyclists, because they choose the smartest, healthiest and most environmentally friendly means of transport.
The organizers, the Fietsersbond and its French-speaking counterpart GRACQ, not only want to thank the cyclists, but also want to show policymakers that a safe infrastructure works. “There is an audience for it and it makes more people cycle,” says the Cyclists’ Union. The initiators also want to show motorists on National Applause Day that things can be done differently.
The Applause Day started as an initiative of the local branch of the Fietsersbond in Mechelen and has been organized on a national level since 2014. The UN has declared June 3 as World Bicycle Day since 2018 to draw attention to the benefits of the bicycle: “a simple, affordable, clean, environmentally friendly and sustainable means of transport”.
