Belgium (Brussels Morning Newspaper), A speech by the President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, is one of the highlights in parliament this week.
She will return to Parliament for her quarterly meeting with MEPs on the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee later on Monday. Inflation, the economic governance review, public debt, and high levels of bank liquidity will be the topics expected to attract the most attention.
Elsewhere, the various political groups will prepare for the 2-5 October plenary session in Strasbourg.
From Tuesday to Friday, ECR MEPs will meet for internal study days in Madrid, Spain. Urgent EU issues such as security and border protection, energy security, industrial policy, and environmental policy will be discussed, as well as the EU in the Iberosphere and visions for Europe’s future.
While in France MEPs will debate and vote on the Media Freedom Act, which aims to strengthen the independence of media and protect editorial decisions from political interference.
They will also vote on a new trade policy tool to respond to countries seeking to coerce the EU or member states, into fighting greenwashing in the bond markets, and on the protection of workers from asbestos.
They will also debate and vote on the revision of the EU 2021-2027 long-term budget, on a new strategy for a better internet for children, and on Moldova’s path to the EU.
They will additionally host a formal sitting with Petr Pavel, President of the Czech Republic.
Later this week, the press service organized a seminar for journalists entitled: “European Media Freedom Act and Digital Services Act: protecting media freedom in a safe online world”.
At the seminar, organized together with the EuropeanNewsRoom, the lead MEPs on these two files will answer questions.
Parliament will this week also organize its annual workshop for recently arrived journalists in Brussels. The session will offer an overview of Parliament’s press and media facilities, the main actors, spokespersons, and contacts, and top tips on how to follow Parliament’s works.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will, meanwhile, meet with the U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine’s Economic Recovery, Penny Pritzker, on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, she will be in Croatia where she will meet Prime Minister Andrej Plenković while on Sunday Metsola will travel to Cyprus, where she will meet with President Nikos Christodoulides.
She will also lay a wreath at the statue of Makarios III, First President of the Republic of Cyprus, and attend the parade in honor of Cyprus Independence Day.
The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament will hold their next external group meeting in Madrid from 25 to 28 September 2023. Under the slogan “Adelante!” they will discuss how to achieve a social Europe.
The S&Ds will address a wide range of topics with their counterparts in Madrid, ranging from social rights, asylum, economic governance, and nature restoration. S&D Group members will hold debates with representatives of trade unions, civil society, and NGOs.

On Wednesday, ECR Group MEP Anna Fotyga together with Renew Group MEP Petras Auštrevičius will host an online discussion focusing on the activities of the Wagner Group in Belarus.
The 1st Green Social Summit, bringing together the Greens, Sumar, and the social movement, will be held on Friday and Saturday in Madrid.
The aim of the Social Summit is to discuss with actors from politics, academia, and civil society how to build a stronger social Europe and launch a political counter-offensive against the right, eight months before the European elections.
