Brussels, (Brussels Morning)- From 2025, all car parks in Brussels with more than ten places must be equipped with charging stations. The obligation applies to both public and private car parks. This is apparent from a decision taken by the government last week on the initiative of Minister of Climate Transition and the Environment Alain Maron (Ecolo).
From 2025, all car parks in Brussels with more than ten places must be equipped with charging stations. That number will be increased over the years to keep up with the electrification of the vehicle fleet.
The Brussels government aims to have 22,000 public charging points by 2035. There are currently only 2,000.
Office car parks must offer at least 10 percent parking spaces with a charging station by 1 January 2025. On January 1, 2030, that will rise to 20 percent. For public car parks, this is 5 percent by 2025 and 10 percent by 2030. In residential buildings, all residents with an electric vehicle must have access to a charging point.
Safety
The decision of the Brussels government not only determines the number of charging stations to be installed, but also the safety standards applicable to the installation of charging points in a car park, such as the adaptation of the electrical installations and their inspection by a recognized body.
The same was determined for the installation of a charging point on a fire-resistant or non-combustible surface and of an efficient ventilation system. The safety standards with regard to the installation of systems that close off the river bank to the charging point in the event of a fire were also determined.
In addition, a ‘charging infrastructure facilitator’ has also been appointed who will from now on guide anyone who wants to install charging stations for free. Citizens, companies, associations and public authorities can make use of these services. The facilitator answers any administrative, regulatory, technical or financial questions asked and also supervises projects.
