In August 2023, a total of 316,974 children were able to benefit from the Brussels age allowance to start the school year well. The amount of the age allowance has risen by 6 percent, the Iriscare service reported on Friday.

The annual age allowance, or the former school bonus, is paid once a year to all Brussels families.

The purpose of the premium is to help parents purchase new school supplies for their offspring. Brussels families do not have to go through any procedure to be entitled to the age allowance. The premium is automatically added to the child benefit for Brussels families and must be advantageous for all Brussels families.

Extra attention for families in a vulnerable situation

The age allowance increases as the age of the child progresses. Due to the indexation, the amounts in 2023 have been increased by 6 percent compared to 2022. As a result, the 0 to 2 year olds and 3 to 5 year olds received 23.43 euros. This amounted to 22.08 euros in 2022. Children aged 6 to 11 received 35.15 euros, compared to 33.12 euros in 2022. Children aged 12 to 17 and 18 to 24-year-olds but not in higher education received 58 .59 euros.

In 2022 this amounted to 55.21 euros. Finally, 18 to 24-year-olds from higher education received 93.74 euros, compared to 88.33 euros in 2022.

The specific Brussels child benefit scheme must be beneficial to all Brussels children and takes into account the specific situation of some families in the region. Extra attention is paid to families in a vulnerable situation or with a lower income.
