Heinz Bierbaum is a sociologist and economist whose academic work focuses on industrial and social policy. He is the head of the international committee of the party Die LINKE (Germany). In December 2019, he was elected president of the Party of the European Left. Bierbaum was also secretary of the IG Metall Union from 1980 to 1996 and a member of the regional parliament of Saarland (Landtag Saarland) from 2009-2017.
