Dyab Abou Jahjah and various supporters are considering whether he can submit a list for the elections in June next year in Brussels following the war between Israel and Gaza. “We want Israel’s war crimes to be recognized as genocide.”
Dyab Abou Jahjah says that he has been urged by many citizens to go to the elections with a list to draw attention to “the genocide” underway in Gaza. “This is very lively. I feel there is a great need for it in Brussels,” he says.
“It is not a classic party, see it more as a form of activism, as a protest against the cowardly and dubious attitude of politicians who do not take a stand against Israel.” According to Abou Jahjah, there is a larger Israeli support base in Brussels than in Flanders.
The Brussels opinion maker wants Israel’s “war crimes to be recognized as genocide. So that whoever minimizes them can be brought to justice.”
Own party
It is still too early to say whether the list will eventually be published, says Jahjah. “It’s either take part in the elections yourself or I provide voting advice. I will certainly not be a candidate for an existing party.”
It is not Abou Jahjah’s first political project. In 1999 he entered into an alliance with the PVDA to participate in the elections under the name Resist. Later, in 2014, he participated in elections under the banner of the Muslim Democratic Party, and in 2018 and 2019 he participated in several elections with Be.One, but did not win a seat.
Later there were discussions with Rik Torfs about the establishment of a new center party, but that initiative was put on hold at the beginning of this year.
