Brussels (Brussels Morning)The Manhattan, Brabant, Masui, Saint-Roch and Saint-Lazarus districts – spread over Saint-Josse-ten-Node, Schaerbeek and Brussels – will undergo a major metamorphosis. Brussels is starting consultation rounds with residents and different sectors to arrive at a shared vision on this part of Brussels.
In 2018, Perspective.brussels, which is responsible for spatial planning in the region, was asked by Prime Minister Rudi Vervoort (PS) to work out a diagnosis for the so-called ‘Territory North’. This should show what the area needs in the coming years. Several government plans and private sector initiatives are already underway in the area. The aim is now to arrive at a shared vision.
“The diagnosis of the area, characterised by the presence of large infrastructures and intersected by several urban fault lines such as the canal, the inner ring road and railway lines, shows that there is a need for public facilities, that many residents live in poverty and that there are large security challenges exist,” it said in a press release.
Upgrading public space
Based on the diagnosis, Perspective.brussels sees four major challenges. “The link between the different neighbourhoods must be restored and the public spaces upgraded. In addition, it is important to adapt the neighbourhoods to contemporary environmental and climate requirements. More diversity in the activities present and in the economic dynamics is necessary, and improve quality of life and safety.
From January 18 to March 6, another public consultation will be organised to further refine the vision of the evolution of this district. “The surveys will address several concrete themes: How can we improve the buildings in the neighbourhood? What major problems do residents and users see in the different zones of the area? How can we improve the quality of life?”
An information meeting for local residents and interested parties will also be held on 16 February.
