If Joe Biden wins the election he will find himself leading a country whose democracy is in crisis. The Trump presidency has ushered in a period of democratic rollback as the administration has attacked the press, sought to limit freedoms of assembly, sought to undermine the legitimacy of elections, accelerated voter suppression and otherwise sought to weaken American democracy.
A President Biden will have to address the challenges of a country reeling from a flawed election and dalliance with authoritarianism that is still bound by a governing document that has institutionalized minority governance and does not treat all voters equally. Rather than address this problem piecemeal, Biden would be wise to centralize all of these issues under the larger issue of democracy and appoint one person to create the commissions, study groups and other efforts to find solutions to these problems which weaken our country. The best person for that role is Stacy Abrams who has been a leader on these issues for years and who is currently America’s most visible and effective voting rights advocate.
