Saudi Arabia continues to commit flagrant human rights violations as evidenced by the recently leaked graphic images of African immigrants being detained there held in inhumane conditions. Telegraph Newspaper published investigation whereby Graphic mobile phone images sent to the newspaper by migrants held inside the detention centres show dozens of emaciated men crippled by the Arabian heat lying shirtless in tightly packed rows in small rooms with barred windows.

In a comment to the Brussels Morning Newspaper, MEP Thierry Mariani described the situation as a scandal and a crime against humanity.

Deploring the double standards applied to this and similar outrages, the European Parliament member questioned why the international community regularly criticizes societal shortcomings in countries like Iran yet takes no action when Saudi Arabia stands accused of killing a journalist for criticizing his own government, and is now seen to be keeping African immigrants locked in appalling conditions. “The United States and the European Union must stop tolerating Riyad if they want to maintain their credibility in international interventions”, Mariani asserted.

Mr. Mariani pointed to the anomaly of some Arab media criticizing prevailing morals and laws in France while steadfastly ignoring actions of their own governments that are tantamount to semi-slavery practices.

Appealing to African nations to do more to safeguard their citizens, Mr. Mariani urged Africa to “find its way to development and to stop letting its children risk their own lives in the current circumstances”.
