Brussels (Brussels Morning – April 17, 2024) Minister of Economy and Regional Planning, Willy Borsus, responded to remarks made by Bastogne’s mayor, clarifying that the announcement regarding the recognition of the military barracks in Bastogne for redevelopment was indeed serious. Borsus emphasized his support for the rehabilitation of a portion of the site, backed by FEDER funds amounting to €4,349,507.12 for the Wallonia US Gate business center.

Was the Announcement Genuine?

In the wake of skepticism surrounding the recognition of the Bastogne barracks for redevelopment, Willy Borsus reaffirms the authenticity of the announcement. Contrary to speculation, Borsus asserts, “The information on the Bastogne barracks was not an April fool’s joke.” He underscores the significance of this recognition as a Strategic Area for Redevelopment (SAR), which paves the way for potential demolition and rehabilitation efforts subsidized by the Walloon Region. Borsus clarifies that only a portion of the site is affected by this recognition, highlighting the financial support available for redevelopment projects.

Backing Rehabilitation Efforts

Addressing concerns over the utilization of funds, Minister Borsus acknowledges his role in supporting the rehabilitation of part of the Bastogne barracks site. He confirms the allocation of €4,349,507.12 from FEDER funds under his ministerial portfolio for the Wallonia US Gate business center. Borsus emphasizes the importance of leveraging these resources to revitalize the area, signaling his commitment to promoting regional development initiatives.
