Brussels (Brussels Morning – August 8, 2023) Following a mass brawl and the discovery of a body at a squat in Vilvoorde, Belgium, Mayor Hans Bonte initially linked the events. However, Halle-Vilvoorde Judicial Authorities have released a statement refuting this connection, shedding light on the situation.

Was There a Connection Between the Brawl and the Body?

In a statement released just before lunchtime on Wednesday, the Halle-Vilvoorde Judicial Authorities stated that there is no link between the discovery of a body at a Vilvoorde squat on Monday evening and a mass brawl earlier that day. Mayor Hans Bonte’s earlier assertion that the deceased person had died during the altercation has been contradicted by this official update.

On Tuesday, Mayor Bonte, representing the socialist party, reported the death of an individual due to a fight at the squat. However, Carol Vercarre of the Halle-Vilvoorde Judicial Authorities clarified to VRT News that the two incidents are not connected. Despite indications of a violent death, forensic investigations are ongoing, and the identity of the victim remains unknown.

Unraveling the Situation: Statements and Investigations

Ms. Vercarre confirmed the discovery of the deceased person and highlighted ongoing investigative procedures, including an autopsy and examination by forensic experts. However, she emphasized that the 14 individuals questioned in relation to the incident, all residing in Belgium illegally, have been released, with no evidence linking them to the death.

The discrepancy between Mayor Bonte’s earlier statement and the official update from the Judicial Authorities underscores the complexity of the situation. While initial reports suggested a connection between the brawl and the body found at the squat, official investigations have revealed otherwise. As authorities continue their inquiries, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain subject to scrutiny and clarification.
