ECR calls for a “broader approach” on EU foreign policy

Brussels, Belgium. 14th March 2019. Flags of participants at an international conference on the future of Syria and the region.

Belgium (Brussels Morning Newspaper), The West has been urged to “better coordinate” its foreign policies. The call comes with wars currently taking place in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The EU has come under fire from some quarters for its response to such crises although Brussels insists it is doing all it can to help bring peace to both regions.

Against this backdrop, the European Conservatives and Reformists in the European Parliament said it wants the “EU and the US to coordinate their foreign policies more closely.”

Anna Fotyga, foreign policy coordinator for the ECR group, said the bond between Brussels and Washington was “the most important partnership in the world”.

But the MEP added, “Unfortunately, in a time of challenges and multiple threats there are still many details to be discussed.”

She said, “For example, an ‘agricultural Ramstein’ is needed to help Ukraine to finance her defense, but also to help EU countries distribute and transit Ukrainian grain production.

“It is not enough for the European Union alone to absorb market shocks caused by Russian aggression. We need a broader approach”, Fotyga said.

Meanwhile, the ECR Group also says that it “strongly condemns the cowardly attack” on Alejo Vidal-Quadras, former president of the Spanish People’s Party of Catalonia and founder of Vox, in which an unknown person recently shot him in the face in the street.

The group “demands” that the Spanish police and judiciary take firm action against those responsible.

ECR Co-President Nicola Procaccini (Italy) said: “We are in shock because we feel very close to our friends from Vox.

“We are glad to hear that our friend Alejo Vidal-Quadras was not seriously injured and we wish him a speedy recovery. We now hope that the police and the judiciary will quickly bring those responsible to justice.”

Further comment to the attack came from ECR Co-President Prof Ryszard Legutko (Poland), who said: “We are hearing frightening news from Spain, where a leading politician from our family of parties has been gunned down in the street.

“We can only hope that Mr. Vidal-Quadras will recover quickly and wish him all the best for his recovery”.

Vidal-Quadras, 78, is also a former MEP and was Vice-President of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2014.
