Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) –  Dentures are removable appliances that replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They are typically made of a gum-colored acrylic base that holds artificial teeth. It is made from various materials such as porcelain, acrylic, or resin. Dentures can be full or partial, depending on the number of missing teeth and the condition of the remaining natural teeth.

Usually, people take some time to get used to it, and patients may experience some initial discomfort or difficulty with speaking and eating. However, with proper care and adjustments, dentures can greatly improve a patient’s quality of life. It can restore your ability to smile and eat comfortably.

Types Of Dentures

Overall, the type of denture that is best for a patient will depend on their individual needs and the condition of their teeth and gums. There are several types of dentures and here is some description below:

1. Full dentures

Full dentures are a type of dental prosthesis that replaces all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. They are typically made of acrylic resin and designed to fit over the gums. Moreover, suction and/or dental adhesive are used to hold them in place. The process of getting full dentures usually involves multiple appointments with a dentist or prosthodontist. During the initial appointment, the dentist will take impressions of the patient’s mouth. They will create a mold of the gums and remaining teeth (if any).

2. Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are removable dental prosthetics that replace one or more missing teeth. They are often used when patients have lost some but not all of their natural teeth. Partial dentures can be made from a variety of materials, including acrylic, metal, or a combination of both. The denture is custom-made to fit the patient’s mouth and is held in place by clasps that attach to the remaining natural teeth. The denture will have artificial teeth that are designed to match the patient’s natural teeth.

3. Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are a type of dental prosthesis that is used to replace missing teeth. These dentures are anchored to dental implants that are surgically placed in the jawbone. It is a good option for patients who have lost multiple teeth or who have significant bone loss in the jaw. However, they are not suitable for everyone. The decision to pursue implant-supported dentures should be made in consultation with a dental professional.

4. Overdentures

Overdentures are a type of removable denture that is supported by dental implants. Unlike traditional dentures, which rest on the gums, overdentures are attached to implants that are surgically placed into the jawbone. The implants provide a stable and secure foundation for the denture, which can improve its stability, comfort, and function.

These dentures are designed for either the upper or lower jaw, or both. They can be supported by as few as two dental implants. It can be a great option for patients who are looking for a more stable and natural-looking replacement for missing teeth.

5. Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are a type of removable denture that is placed in your mouth immediately after your teeth are extracted. They are designed to help you maintain your appearance, speech, and eating ability while your gums heal. It can take some time to make permanent dentures. The process of getting immediate dentures typically involves a dental exam, and impressions of your teeth and gums. Immediate dentures can help you avoid the embarrassment of being without teeth while your gums heal.

6. Custom Dentures

To get custom dentures, you will first need to visit a dentist or prosthodontist for an evaluation. During the evaluation, the dentist will examine your mouth, take measurements, and create impressions of your teeth and gums. These impressions will be used to create a mold of your mouth and will be sent to a dental lab. This is where your custom dentures will be fabricated. Your dentist will provide instructions on how to care for your dentures to ensure they last as long as possible.

While the prosthetic teeth are carefully crafted to look and function like natural teeth.
