1.Helsinki

As the capital city, Helsinki is one of the most famous places in Finland. It is the best Finnish city for ex-pats as it is situated on the southern coast. The city has much milder winters than the northern cities. It has an estimated population of 630,000 people. Around 10% are foreigners and amount to a sizeable ex-pat community.

Helsinki is the cultural hub of Finland. It is where the buildings are a mix of modern, Art Nouveau, and Scandinavian architectural styles. There is also a huge Design District, where you will be able to find numerous Finnish galleries and some high-end artsy stores. The city is also safe, easy to get around, and has an efficient public transportation system.

2. Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland. Living in Lapland is a dream, for many. This sizable city has around 60,000 residents. It is just 10 kilometers from the Arctic Circle. You can spend your free time sleigh riding and chasing the northern lights. If you want to admire picture-perfect white landscapes, then this is the perfect place for you.

The city is a cultural hub and has an art museum and science center. The cafe scene is also famous here as locals, ex-pats, and tourists are filling the warm and cozy cafes and coffee shops all through the year.

3. Oulu

Oulu, in central Finland. It is a more realistic alternative to Rovaniemi. The winters are freezing, but summers can be a bit more pleasant. The city was founded in 1605 and is filled with pretty historic buildings designed with neoclassical architectural style.

Oulu is located at the Oulujoki River and it meets the Bay of Bothnia. The waterfront market square, Kauppatori, is lined with food vendors and stalls of all sorts of products.

There is the main pedestrian area, which is full of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Many foreigners choose the neighborhood of Raksila, as it is western style and has many modern apartments.

Oulu has a population of around 200,000 people. It is also a significant business district and is home to many global companies like Nokia and Microsoft. As a result, tech, IT, and engineering jobs are plenty in this area. There are also some teaching jobs available at the University of Oulu.

4. Turku

Turku is located on the southwest coast. It is one of the best cities to live in Finland. Like Oulu, Turku has a lot of majestic rivers and coastal views. It has a rich history and is the oldest city in Finland. With almost 200,000 people residing here, the city offers plenty to see all year round.

You will be able to find some fab cultural spots like Turku Cathedral. The Luostarinmäki open-air museum will keep you entertained during your visit. There are also tons of cozy restaurants, bars, and cafes that are inside the historic building. Turku is popular among ex-pats and digital nomads who love to enjoy nature and the outdoors. You can also enjoy many river activities in the summer, such as boat cruises.

5. Tampere

Tampere is one of the best cities in Finland. It has the third largest population and offers excellent education and employment opportunities. Tampere is popular among ex-pats that have kids as there are many things to do. It is located inland and is situated between Näsijärvi Lake and Pyhäjärvi Lake beach.

You can reach Helsinki in 90 minutes if you use the high-speed rail service. It is located in the center of Finland. The city has its small international airport and you can fly directly to other countries from this city. You will find many interesting spots to have fun and stay entertained.

The cost of living is slightly higher in this city as compared to Turku and Oulu. You can rent a one-bedroom apartment for around €600 and €800. There are also many well-paid job opportunities as there are many global companies located here. The city also has a well-known university and an international school.
